Legislative Working Group
As a network, 1000 Grandmothers began primarily as people who went to demonstrations together. As we developed, we wanted to provide avenues of engagement for grandmothers that did not require people to show up in the streets, and more importantly, could facilitate change in other ways. We believed that holding legislators accountable for policies that affect climate - particularly those that support the fossil fuel industry - was an important way to have an impact.
MISSION: The 1000 Grandmothers Legislative Working Group helps to pass pending legislation that will mitigate and/or adapt to the Climate Crisis. We also oppose legislation that undercuts efforts to address this problem. . WHAT WE DO:
JOIN with us as we learn more and act to persuade our legislators to support climate friendly legislation and block dangerous legislation. To be most effective in our California state work, we often target one or more Senators and Assembly members who are most key to leverage for a specific piece of legislation. If you provide us with your address and telephone number, we will contact you with action alerts only when we are targeting your Senator or Assembly member. Barbara Rhine chairs the Legislative Working Group, and Susan Penner is the group’s liaison. The Legislative Working Group also works with with other Bay Area environmental organizations, including 350 Bay Area, the Sunflower Alliance, the AB 345 Coalition and Climate Health Now on California legislative issues. The Legislative Working Group will keep the 1000 Grandmothers informed and involved in California state climate crisis priorities. We’ll lead 1000 Grandmothers in state level advocacy by inviting members to join us in providing public testimony, signing on-line petitions and contacting their state Assembly and Senate members.
