1000 Grandmothers
For Future Generations

Grandmothers on the Move

We are elder women and allies stepping up to the urgency of the climate crisis.  We act in support of the rights of Native Americans and other frontline communities.  We believe that  we cannot address the climate crisis without addressing systemic racism.   That is what climate justice means to us.   1000 Grandmothers allows us to augment our individual voices and impact by providing opportunities to act collectively.   We  find ways to use the particular influence of our being generational grandmothers to strengthen the Climate Justice Movement. Our Principles include collective nonviolent action, community building and  kindness.

WHAT DO WE DO?
We Show Up
  • We show up at international, national, and local climate justice actions and demonstrations;
  • We show up for legislative and electoral campaigns that confront the power of the fossil fuel industry.
  • We show up to support indigenous and front line struggles, to protests called for by youth leaders; to hearings and boycotts and campaigns to stop the fossil fuel industry from destroying our only planet.
As Grandmothers have a lot to say about a lot of things – but we want to do more than bring our wisdom.  We know that those who will lead us into the future, need us to have their backs.  They are counting on us to show up.

We also organize ongoingly :
We have working groups currently focused on the following initiatives:
  • Art  - Create art that brings attention to our messages of environmental healing in our actions.
  • Legislative - Lobby for legislation to help mitigate &/or adapt to the Climate Crisis and opposing detrimental bills.
  • Non Violent Direct Action - Support Grandmothers participation in  actions for climate justice. Testimonials
  • Protect the Bay- Opposing dredging of the Bay that would enable Bay Area refineries to import and refine Tar Sands.
  • Electoral work: working on electing representatives that will help forward a climate justice agenda
Join us!
We help every grandmother (and ally) find multiple ways and levels to join in our work. And we welcome everyone to do as much or as little, whenever, and for as long as they wish.

If you want to join us to work on the climate crisis, please add your name and email to our list. We won’t clutter up your inbox with too many announcements. And we promise never to share your information.

           Our Definition of                              Grandmother
Some of us have biological grandchildren and some of us do not.  In the spirit of the indigenous tradition of calling all elder women, 'grandmothers', we call ourselves grandmothers.  We are all here because we care about future generations,

History
1000 Grandmothers for Future Generations began in response to the historic resistance of indigenous water protectors and allies to the KXL oil pipeline at Standing Rock ND in 2016.  Feeling an urgency to bring our collective wisdom and experience to help build the power of the Climate Justice Movement, a half dozen elder women from Oakland and Berkeley, CA started meeting In October 2016.  more...

Calendar
With the onset of the pandemic, grandmothers have pulled back from face to face work.  Some of us have found ways to participate in car rallies, socially distant demonstrations and vigils.  Many of us continue to meet on-line to support each other- and move the work forward in any way we can.  We are learning how to support each other, build our resilience, organize, raise our voices, and continue to build power with social justice and climate justice groups around the country - on line.  We have also joined the Black Lives Matter Movement.  Climate justice will not happen without racial justice.  Events will be posted soon.
